BOTM// The Defining Decade
This year has been a whirlwind already and I'm not sure how I feel about it already being May! Eeek... I'm somewhat behind on my reading schedule so my sincerest apologies for not getting the book of the month up in February and March. Being that February was the shortest month and quite honestly one of the busiest months I've had in a while, I literally looked up and realized it's already March! And then April--- 2016, how are you flying by so quickly?!
Anyway, pardon my rant. Let's get to the book of the month shall we?
So here's a book that's been sitting on my book shelf for about 6 months now.
I first discovered this book from Dara, who's a phenomenal blogger and photographer.
I was a bit skeptical about this book because of the author. I'm not too found of counselors and physiologists telling me about myself-- but alas, I'm learning that given the chance, we can all learn a thing or two from anyone.
I'm honestly surprised at how much I enjoy this book. I'm admittedly only half way through, but I've learned a wealth of information about navigating my 20s. Some things Dr.Jay mentioned are truths that I've learned on my own already, some are ones I'm learning now and others I'm glad I have the knowledge so I don't have to learn on my own.
She touches on just about every aspect of life that 20 somethings have to battle with. From work to relationships to family-- name it, it's most likely there. Her writing in unexpected. I assumed there'd be rebukes towards millennials who embrace a "YOLO" lifestyle and plenty of generational comparisons, shunning the ways of our generation.
In fact she does the opposite of my expectations. She weaves in narratives from previous students and mentees. She even shares parts of her story. Her style is riveting and advice is immediately applicable.
As per usual, do your destiny a favor and replace catching up on your latest Netflix fix and give "The Defining Decade" a well deserved chance.
And to make up for my book of the month hiatus, be sure to check out "the book of Questions". A great conversation starter and a worthy contestant at your next game night.
