"The thing about FEAR."

"The thing about FEAR."

My mentor once told me that fear is defined as False Expectations Appearing Real and since that day, those words have seem to reappear in my heart when fear seems to come in like a flood.

We all have our fears.

fear of failure

fear of the future

fear of making the wrong decision

fear of marrying the wrong person

fear of not fulfilling destiny.

I’ve realized that most of the fears we all share are deeply rooted in our lack to trust God’s ability to orchestrate our lives. It baffles me that the things we often fear are in fact all renounced by the LOVE that God has for us. It is God’s love that allows us to fail in some areas so that we can succeed in others (Jeremiah 29:11), it is His love that tells us not to be anxious about the future (Philippians 4:6), It is in His love that gives you the assurance, that you will be lead to the right person to marry and direct you to making the right mistakes.

Yet the biggest fear I struggle(d) with is that of failing God.

Yes, the thought of straying from His will gives me distress– I’m talking can’t sleep, can’t eat, can’t breath. The physical manifestation of this fear is something that has always gripped me. Now to many believers, this fear may seem positive in some sense because it keeps you focused on God–BUT the issue here is that my fear of failing God makes me focus on my shortcomings. Instead I disregard grace and only focus on the things that I don’t do right. I know I am not the only one who’s dealt with this– this fear is real and is the reason why many believers battle with Low Spiritual Self-esteem. Nothing you do is good enough. You leave the place of prayer discouraged, your praise just doesn’t seem enough, you wallow in your past sin and struggle to see yourself the way God sees you. And just like any other form of low-self esteem or insecurity, you can never experience the beauty of who you are or what you have the potential to be, until you  release it.

The thing about fear is that is reminds you of everything you are not and amplifies your weaknesses. It tells you what you cannot do or be– it quenches your potential and destroys hope.

So my heart turns to scripture…..

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.” -Deuteronomy 31:6

Despite the fear I may feel and the sometimes difficulty in believing that I am capable of making the right decisions that please God, His word never fails to give me comfort. The reality of God’s promise on my life, hands me the gift of confidence that has no earthly equivalence.

God is rooting for YOU. Study scripture, speak positively and be accountable to a trusted friend– gain some Spiritual self-esteem by working with the Holy Spirit.

If we continue to live in fear of failing and disregard the opportunities to grow spiritually by living in fear, we will soon shortchange ourselves and reduce the chances of ever being able to relish in the destinies God has for us.

Rest. Pray often. Worship daily. Rise above FEAR.

Grace & Peace,
